In this guide, we’ll show you exactly how to know if someone read your message on Instagram, what the “Seen” indicator means, and how it works in one-on-one and group chats.
With Instagram’s built-in messaging features, it’s possible to check if someone has read your DM (Direct Message) but only if you know where to look. Whether you’re trying to follow up on an important message or just curious about your message status, understanding Instagram’s read receipt system can save you time and confusion.

Know If Someone Read Your Message On Instagram
Open the Instagram app on your device and log into your account if you haven’t already.
Go to your profile page, then tap the three horizontal lines (☰) in the top-right corner to open settings and activity menu.

Navigate to Messages and story replies.

Scroll down until you see the Show read receipts option under the messaging section.

Tap the toggle switch to turn ON read receipts. Once enabled, you’ll be able to see when someone has read your messages and they’ll see when you’ve read theirs too.

With this feature enabled, Instagram will display “Seen” below your messages once the recipient has opened them.
