How To Enable On-Screen Virtual Keyboard On Mac

An on-screen virtual keyboard is one of the most powerful but underutilized features of macOS. It is well-built to provide accessibility but also gives convenience for typing without using a physical keyboard. Whether you are solving a faulty keyboard or want to help someone with impaired ability; even if you want to learn different methods of typing, the virtual keyboard is a lifesaver.

This on-screen keyboard is mainly for accessibility and allows you to control your Mac via mouse, trackpad, or other pointing devices. It is also useful for people who use assistive devices or have no access to a physical keyboard or feel it unnecessary or inconvenient to touch one.

This tutorial will show you how to enable and use the on-screen virtual keyboard on your Mac, its benefits, setting changes, and a few tricks to make masters out of you. So, let’s get started!

Enable On-Screen Virtual Keyboard On Mac

Begin by accessing the Settings on your Mac. To do this, find the Settings icon located on the App Dock and click on it. Then, scroll down on the settings page and locate the ‘Keyboard‘ option. Click on it to proceed.

At this point, find the ‘Text Input‘ section within the keyboard settings. From here, find the ‘Input Sources‘ and click on ‘Edit‘ to access the settings.

Following this, you’ll see the ‘Show Input Menu in Menu Bar.’ You’ll notice a toggle switch next to it. Toggle this switch on to enable the virtual keyboard. Once done, tap on ‘Done‘ at the bottom of the menu to apply the changes.

Afterward, you’ll notice a keyboard icon appear on the menu bar (top right corner) on your Mac. Click on the keyboard icon and from the menu that appears, click on ‘Show Keyboard Viewer.’

From here, you’ll see a virtual keyboard pop-up on your Mac desktop. Now, you can use the virtual keyboard to type in your commands and much more.
